In the early years of the 20th century, le Fresnoy was a popular entertainment establishment where one could go from the roller skating rink to a cinema, from the dance hall to a wrestling show. Le Fresnoy became a National Contemporary Arts Studio in 1997, and was restored by French-American architect Bernard Tschumi who saved the original building's halls and made connections between the old and the new. The project won an award in the United States.
